Marilyn Keating served as Artist in Education Resident to facilitate in the creation of this multimedia mural at Atlantic County Special Services School,
a school for special needs students, during the 2012-2013 academic year.
Working with art teachers Sarah Friedley and Lisa Confora, each of the school's more than 400 students made a tile, and the rest were made by staff and parents.
These photos were taken at a celebratory event where the mural was unveiled. The colorful 24-by-4-foot mural, which hangs on a wall in a hall just off the school's main entrance,
was designed to fit the school's motto, Planting the Seeds for Success. The centerpiece of the mural is a large papier mache butterfly flanked by trees
and a vibrant sunrise and set against a backdrop of more than 600 clay tiles. The mural was designed by Friedley, Confora, and Keating
and executed by a small group of students who met Thursday afternoons since the beginning of the 2012 school year, firing, painting, glazing and affixing pieces to the plywood setting.
